Although Caleb does not appear in the next episode, his presence is felt throughout.  When Livvie is in the alley, preparing to meet and then kill Zach in retaliation for Jack's apparent murder, she feels Caleb nearby, yelling at him to leave her alone.   Later on, telling Alison about her first meeting with the mysterious man she would later learn is named Caleb, she refers to him as a "jerk" watching her from the bushes as she mourned by Jack's grave.  Unlike the Livvie of later arcs, Livvie here is independent as well as feisty, not depending on manipulating others to wreak revenge.  She
arms herself with a knife to attack Zach and doesn't rely on her seductive wiles to entrap him.  But like the Livvie of later arcs, she is impetuous, acting first without really thinking things through
or planning.
*********************************
After Livvie confronts Zach and threatens him with the knife, he manages to get it away from her and attempts to rape her.
However, Caleb, lurking unseen in the alley, makes a commotion, giving Livvie the opportunity she needs to escape.  In his scene with Zach, Caleb is a force of quiet, controlled menace, speaking softly
and calmly but with deadly intent.  In response to Zach's question, "Who the hell are you," Caleb makes his threat immediately known--"Your worst nightmare," he promises Zach.  Although the story line has not yet revealed at this point that Caleb is a vampire, Caleb makes some references to blood.  For example, when Zach says that he has nothing valuable, no diamonds, Caleb slowly replies, "I'm searching for something . . . more precious," the slight pause giving
his words an especially sinister tone.   Then when Zach says that he has nothing on him, Caleb says he's wrong, replying, "You have blood on your hands.  Not to mention your face.  What a shame."  As he says this, his eyes have an expression of softness yet malevolence, a sense of innocent evil, the danger of a predator used to killing without guilt or other human emotions.  Caleb's face is playful and seductive as he finally reveals his name in response to Zach's angry
exclamation "I don't know who the hell you are."  "My name is Caleb,"
he almost sweetly replies. "Not that it will matter, though.  Soon you won't remember anyone's name.  Not even your own. " Slowly moving towards the kill, Caleb advances, shoving Zach against
the wall and throttling his throat.  Just before he kills Zach, he gives him a final piece of advice:  "It isn't nice to mistreat
women.  Especially that one." As Caleb squeezes the life out of Zach, for the first time in this scene we see Caleb's face contorted with rage.  Only then is his simmering, lethal fury released.
