"I know one rule that works. I saw it myself," Jack says defiantly. "You can't lay one fang on me in the presence of love, in front of Livvie. That's why you didn't kill me last time you saw
me."

"True," Caleb agrees. "I do love Olivia. [He smiles tauntingly, mischievously, goading Jack's jealousy.] And you're right, Jack. I can't kill in the presence of love. But . . .then again. . . [He
looks around.] I don't think Olivia is here now, is she?" [Caleb then bares his fangs while still smiling.]
Meanwhile, Livvie, dozing on the church pew, has a dream in which she hears Jack calling to her. Mixed in with Jack's cries is Caleb's voice saying "I'm waiting. Come to me." The dream overlaps
with "reality" as the scene flashes back to the basement of the church, where Caleb  is yelling at Jack, "I said, COME HERE."
As Jack struggles to resist Caleb's summons, Caleb remarks with an
abrupt shift in tone,"Someone's got potential. I'm impressed, Jack, I am. Give in," he says softly, seductively. "And cross over."

"And kill someone. No," Jack argues, "I'm not going to do it."

"You can live forever, Jack," Caleb promises. "Come. Join me. While the offer's still on the table. Because you can't beat me."

But Jack continues to refuse Caleb's offer and defy Caleb's commands to look at him. "No, " Jack stubbornly persists. "I will not let myself be like you. I will not be one of the walking dead."

"Then you'll just be dead," Caleb calmly replies. "Period."
With these words he pounces on Jack and once again uses his telekinetic powers to hurl Jack against the wall. As they struggle, Caleb hovers over Jack, baring his fangs and kicking aside the broken planks that separate him from his resistant initiate. However, instead of quickly killing Jack when Jack is lying on the ground at Caleb's mercy, Caleb inexplicably pulls Jack up to a standing position. Could a sense of affection, admiration or another, less brotherly, emotion be swaying Caleb's impulse to kill a rival? Whatever the reason, Caleb's hesitation gives Jack a chance to spring away from Caleb's grasp.

"That's it, Jack," Caleb says. "Keep your distance. I can't hurt
you if I can't touch you, right?"

"You think I'm afraid?" Jack bluffs.
