“Stop, all right!” Rafe scolds, becoming petulant.  The confrontation is not going as expected.  Rafe had summoned Caleb, foolishly believing he could somehow threaten and intimidate Caleb into revealing the truth, but now, the tables are turned, and Rafe is pouting like a child who lost a bet he was confident of winning.  “You know exactly what it was,” he sulks.  “Now I don’t know how you did it, and right now I don’t even care.  But I do know that you planted those lies to make Alison think she is my sister.”

“Your sister?” Caleb laughs, feigning amused surprise. “Is that why the wedding didn’t happen?  I’m sorry, that’s just the worst break I ever heard about. What can I say?  Sorry.”

“You set it up!” Rafe bristles.

“You know,” Caleb smiles mischievously, “there are parts of the world where that kind of thing doesn’t matter too much.  Maybe you and Alison could move there.  Having children might become a little awkward, but . . . ”

His taunt is cut short as Rafe leaps at Caleb and hits him in the mouth.

“Good shot, Rafe,” Caleb remarks, licking at the blood trickling from his mouth.   Though injured slightly and taken a bit by surprise, he remains arrogant and condescending. “You always were pretty quick.”

“Yeah, got a lot more where that came from,” Rafe boasts sulkily.

“And while I’m flattered at your belief in my power to manipulate your life,” Caleb pauses, touching his mouth and licking the blood from his finger.  “Just because you’re a freak, you’re not blaming me for your little brother-sister love nest.”

“It has you written all over it,” Rafe glowers.

“OK, say you’re right,” Caleb speculates.  “Tell me how I orchestrate a feat like that, hmmm?  What evidence do I plant to convince your fiancée, I mean, your ex-fiancee,” he emphasizes, “to kick her big brother to the curb, hmm?  You don’t know, do you?”

“I’ll find out,” Rafe vows.

“What if you’re wrong, hmm?” Caleb challenges.  “What if this is another pathetic attempt for you to blame me for the disaster you call your life?”

“You WILL tell me the truth,” Rafe threatens.

“Or what?  Or what, Rafe?” Caleb taunts.  “What are you going to do?  You can’t kill me.  As a matter of fact, what the hell are we even doing here right now?”
“That . . . that’s a good question.  That’s a really good question,” Rafe repeats.  “Because you know what?  Let’s be a little more specific about that.  What are YOU doing here, Caleb?  Huh?  What are you really doing here?” he asks, gaining strength and assuming a slightly teasing tone.  “It’s not just for the fame.  So let’s see—what could it be?  Oh, I think I know.”
