“And just how would you know what she did or didn’t do?” Caleb retorts, sniffing the air and sensing Rafe’s approach.  “I thought I smelled something,” he pouts disdainfully when Rafe joins him and Jamal outside the gym.  “Are you one of her bodyguards, too?”

“Imani, she’s just starting out, OK, she’s getting her life started, she barely knows anybody,” Rafe notes, suddenly defending the woman he had also suspected of being involved in the ring’s disappearance.  “Doesn’t make sense that she would have the ring.”

“Huhh,” Caleb laughs.  “I’m beginning to think she is hiding something, for you guys to make such a big deal about this.  So what is it, fellas?  Why don’t one of you tell me where the ring is or else I’m going to go in there and find the girl, only this time I’m not going to be so charming about it. . . . I’m not asking for permission here, fellas.”
Although  Jamal and Rafe point out that Imani wasn’t even in town when Joshua died and, thus, “there’s no way she could possibly be involved,” Caleb, unconvinced or else testing their resolve, continues his threat, heading back towards the gym just as Jamal, caving under the pressure, admits that he, not Imani, has the ring.

Jamal has, at last, revealed the truth, but he is not yet ready to actually relinquish the ring.  He, like Rafe, fears the ring’s potential for disaster. Having, rather hypocritically, used the ring for his own trivial, often selfish purposes, Jamal believes that it must not fall into evil hands, including those of its rightful owner, Caleb Morley.  He and Rafe assume that they have the right to play God, choosing who can possess the ring’s magic.  They fail to realize, however, that the ring is most dangerous when worn by someone who lacks understanding regarding the consequences of its power.  Caleb is the only one who knows the secrets and repercussions of the ring’s magic.  He alone knows the full extent of the ring’s capacity to alter fate and enchain the soul.
