| "The Gift" #8 (cont.) “Yeah, well, I’ve been thinking about that,” she muses. “You told me to tell you if anything strange happened before I morphed into Alison’s world, right? . . . Well, I was at the Elixir and so was that girl, too.” She points to Imani, who, along with Jamal, Chris, and Elizabeth, is helping Alison prepare for the grand opening. “And then I came here to see Alison, and she just happened to show up. But do you think it was just a coincidence?” |

| Meanwhile the real “ring thief,” Jamal, despite his misgivings about its magic, continues to use the ring to read Imani’s mind. Furtively, he fiddles with it, making a wish that he can again find out what Imani is thinking. Probing her consciousness in this manner and thereby discovering that Imani would like to have a membership to the gym but cannot afford it, he walks over towards Alison and whispers his suggestion that Imani be given a free membership as a gift for her assistance in preparing food for the gym grand opening party. Alison agrees and quickly tells Imani the good news. Although Jamal has used the ring to give Imani a much-desired gift, he has violated her privacy in the process. Like Caleb and Rafe, Jamal has, without permission, delved into the secret dreams and desires of the woman he loves, believing he had the right to do so and that his mental rape was justified by the results it made possible. Jamal’s intentions (to make Imani happy) were good but his means of fulfilling them were morally troubling. Jamal is not alone in trying to uncover Imani’s secrets. Rafe, Caleb, and Livvie, likewise, are determined to find out what the mysterious new woman in town may have to hide. |
