| "The Gift" #7 (cont.) “Poor Frank?” Caleb laughs. “Poor Frank? Is this the same Frank that was going to pour acid on your face not so long ago?” he reminds her. “We all have to learn to forgive one another,” she replies with preacher-like solemnity, while Caleb, sarcastically echoing her remark, smirks with derisive disbelief. “Move forward with our lives and count the blessings that we have.” “Oh, so you would like us to maybe count the blessings that we have?” he again mockingly echoes. “And you are my blessing, Caleb,” she coos, embracing him. “Our love is a blessing. It’s just that all of this—this anger and violence—I’m really just happy that we have one another, you know? What else do we need?” |

| “You know what I need,” he murmurs seductively, caressing her face.
“I know exactly what you need,” she smiles, hesitating slightly to prolong his anticipation. “Muffins.” “What?” he gasps, furrowing his brows in bewilderment at her off-base, almost idiotic, response, muffins, of course, being far from what he had in mind. His Olivia would never suggest muffins, let alone bake them, so clearly something is drastically wrong with her. She seems, unnervingly, like Tess, standing before him, so happily, cluelessly, smiling, so sweet and naďve she could almost make him gag. |

| Later, having made some muffins and changed her clothes, Livvie returns to the living room. Her hair drawn back in a ponytail, she wears a pink sweatshirt and apron. “Caleb, sweetie?” she calls out. “Your muffins are in the oven and I’m feeling much better. . . . Powdered and squeaky clean just for you.”
“You look . . . ” he pauses, stunned by her uncharacteristic choice of outfit. “Happy?” she interrupts, smiling at him. “Come on, healthy? Ready to change the world?” “Kind of dopey,” he remarks with a mocking smile. |

| “Dopey? Honey, I’m comfortable,” she chirps. “Besides, this . . . this is just perfect. Just me and my guy in our home, in our own little world, just the two of us sharing a nice, quiet evening together."
“I think it’s going to take many lifetimes to understand you,” Caleb says in an amused yet appreciative tone. “You’re full of surprises.” “Good. I like surprising my guy,” she grins. “Only happy surprises, though, which makes me think of those muffins. Wait till you have a taste of them. . . . The chocolate chip ones, now, those are the ones that are worth fighting for.” |
