“Because I am tried of playing the games,” Rafe answers.  “I don’t want to do it anymore.  You know what I want?  I want to finally marry Alison.  If you thought about this, if you thought about this for one minute, you would realize that you and I are actually not so different.  You do want to make music, right?  With the whole big, beautiful rock star life?  But you know what you want more than anything?  You want to share that life with Olivia. . . . If we do this right, if we play this right, if we agree to peace in our time, then we can both have what really matters to us most.”

Rafe’s words seem to contradict almost all of his previous actions.  Although Rafe assures Caleb that they “are actually not so different” in their goals, he has on many other occasions insisted that he and Caleb are much different.   He has consistently denied the many similarities in aspirations and obsessions that he and Caleb share, treating Caleb as a brutal animal to be destroyed instead of acknowledging their mutual goals.  It is obvious that Rafe hopes to gain something by convincing Caleb to agree to a harmonious settlement.

“And if we don’t agree?” Caleb challenges.

“Well, hmm, then nobody gets to live happily ever after,” Rafe smugly replies.

“So how do you see this whole truce working?” Caleb asks with a rather dismissive smile.  “Just divide the city down the middle, you take the east side, I’ll take the west side?”
“OK, well, here’s the thing,” Rafe explains.  “See, Joshua’s plan is history.  So, if I get one wind of hearing you are trying to turn this into some vampire land, I’m going to be after you so quick you won’t see me coming.”

“Joshua was an idiot,” Caleb sneers, his mouth twisted in disgust. “His plan lacked any semblance of honor or nobility.”

“OK, OK, now if that’s not your way and your way is honor and nobility, then you’ll do me a big favor and keep your vampires in check,” Rafe says, setting forth his conditions.

“So far I’m only hearing a lot about what I’m supposed to do and not a lot of quid or quo,” Caleb remarks.

“OK, and any other slayers will stay out of your way,” Rafe adds rather reluctantly.

“I can live with that,” Caleb agrees.
“Good. Oh, ahem,” Rafe pauses before mentioning the other crucial condition.  “Just one more thing.”

“The other shoe drops,” Caleb observes sardonically.

“Stay away from Alison,” Rafe warns.
