| "The Gift" #4 (cont.) “Caleb, listen to me,” she replies, her voice choking with self-pitying melodrama. “I am not the one who started this. Any happiness I have ever found, she has been there to try and destroy it for me.” “If you believe that, you don’t know her at all!” Caleb scoffs. “She is so wrapped up right now in her own life, she’s not thinking about you or me.” |

| “No, she’s thinking about a lot,” Livvie persists. “She’s thinking about her next move, that’s what she’s thinking about.”
“You have got to let this thing with Alison go. Just let it go,” he warns. |

| “No, you don’t understand!” she complains. “It is not just a thing. She happens to be my worst enemy. You know what? I’m not going to do this anymore. No, I won’t. I’m not doing it.”
“Meaning what?” Caleb prompts. “Meaning I am telling you for the record, just so there is no misunderstanding here—no more Alison,” she threatens. “I want her out of our lives completely. Do you understand that? I don’t want to ever see you with her again. Ever.” “Did I hear you right? Did you just give me an ultimatum?” he sneers. “It’s just that we’re working really hard to get our lives back on track,” she responds, her voice suddenly meek and scared. “And I just . . . the thought that Alison being in our way was a distraction . . . ” |

| “Answer my question,” Caleb commands, cutting off her wavering excuse. “Did you just give me an ultimatum?”
“Yeah, I guess I did,” she says, the fear growing within her as she hesitantly admits the truth. “So answer the question. Stop seeing Alison or . . . ?” he goads. “Just stay away,” she replies. Evading his gaze, she is afraid to finish the sentence implied by her ultimatum. Once again, she has acted impetuously, her ill-chosen threat, sparked by jealousy and spitefulness, has intensified Caleb’s anger. He resents her attempts to manipulate him and bend him to her will. Proud and defiant, he will not let her or anyone else dictate where he goes and with whom he associates. |
