"The Gift" #21 (cont.) “I really need to get going, Caleb,” she replies, eager to get home with her victory prize, the spoils of war yielded to her without a fight. “The ring—it is beautiful, isn’t it?” he remarks with a boyish smile. “I will take really good care of it,” she emphasizes again, an edge of frustration in her voice. She wants to hurry back to her cozy little home with Rafe. “I know you will,” Caleb continues smiling. “But are you sure that maybe you wouldn’t rather have this one?” From nowhere, it seems, he produces a ring, exactly similar in appearance to the one he had handed her.

“Oh, my God, you tricked me!” she mutters, realizing now that she has a worthless, powerless counterfeit. “Although yours is a pretty good fake,” he smirks, taking the fake ring from her and tossing it in the fireplace, then proudly displaying the real ring on his finger. “But I assure you, this is the one you came for.”

Seething with anger at being duped, Alison accuses him of having no sense of honor, “no real feelings and no real emotions at all.” “All you care about is power,” she indignantly exclaims, “power to hold over me and Rafe. . . . I pity you and all the people that you infect. Even, for once in my life, I pity Livvie.” Caleb listens, sneering and pouting sarcastically, showing his condescending disregard for her flimsy attempts to wound his feelings or ignite his remorse. But gradually he loses patience with her rant. She has had her say; now it his turn to speak his mind. “OK, you know something?” Caleb retorts, grabbing her arm with enough force to hurt her slightly. “You had your little tantrum, OK. So let me ask you something—who do you think you are? . . . What kind of arrogance leads you to believe that you deserve to have anything that’s mine? What in Hell’s name led you to believe for even one moment I’d hand over my ring to any one of you?”
