“I didn’t want to,” she whimpers.  “I didn’t want to.  I just wanted to warn her. . . . I wanted to warn
her . . . to stay away from you.  When I saw the picture in the paper of the two of you, it just made me so mad!” Seized by a fit of jealous rage, she is screaming, like a toddler having a temper tantrum.

“Yeah, you know what? You also told me you understood that,” he admonishes.  “You lied to me.  Do you understand that?  You lied to me!”

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, baby,” she snivels, desperately clutching at him.  “I love you.  I . . . I get crazy sometimes.  I’m sorry.  Please, please, I’m sorry.”  She grasps his hand, caresses it, kisses his fingers.  Her lips brush against something metal, and as she glances down at his hand, she notices that he is wearing the ring.
“Your ring!” she gasps. “Oh, my God!  Caleb, you got you ring back.”

“Don’t,” he snarls, pulling his hand away.  “Don’t even touch it!”

“You got your ring back!” she repeats in a happy voice.  Ignoring his stern reprimand, perhaps even oblivious to it, she focuses on the ring, her hope to make everything right again.  “Do you know what this means? You can help my father. You can make this all go away. You can just make a wish and it will go away.”  She grabs his hand, holding it in hers and caressing his fingers again as he looks at her with disgust.  “Are you going to do it?  Are you going to help. . . to help me help my dad? Are you going to do that? Are you . . . ?”

“I’m sorry,” he gruffly interrupts, tearing his hand from her grasp.  “What’s done is done.”

“Yeah, so undo it.  Caleb, undo it!” she demands.  “You have the power to do or undo anything you want. I want you to help my father.  If you love me, you’ll do it.”

“If I love you!” he yells, his lips curled in a sneer as he emphasizes the word “if.”  “I’m sorry, Sweetheart.  This is all you, and your father is going to have to live with the consequences.”  He glares at her, his fingers now touching in a harsh, punitive caress.  He is weary of having her always question his love, weary of that constant “if” snaking between them, the doubt and jealousy continually poisoning their relationship.   The “if” is growing, its serpentine coils clutching at him, infecting him with its venom.
“So what are you saying?  What, are you trying to teach me a lesson?  What are you . . .” she cries, her voice choked with bitter sobs.
