| "The Gift" #18 (cont.) Rafe rather condescendingly dismisses her remarks by accusing her of “living in a dream world” if she really believes Caleb has changed. It isn’t possible, he asserts, for a vampire such as Caleb to suddenly “grow a conscience.” He reminds her of Caleb’s numerous past misdeeds—stealing Ian’s child, dividing Livvie, turning her mother into a vampire, ruining their wedding by making them think they were brother and sister—and implies that with Livvie now eternally linked to Caleb, Livvie will share with him the ring’s power to destroy everyone else’s happiness. The thought that Livvie could very easily obtain access to the ring now that Caleb has it is so troubling to Alison that she eventually gives up her argument with Rafe, who stubbornly vows to continue his fight with Caleb over the malefic Morley heirloom. Sobbing with grief and self-pity, Livvie is unaware that Caleb has regained his ring. He approaches as she sits on the stairwell, her face wet with tears, and kisses her. |

| “It’s horrible,” she laments. “Why did this have to happen?”
“Oh, I think we both know why it happened,” he says in a cold, stern voice. “And I’m guessing you know how.” |

| “What are you talking about?” she exclaims, not wanting to admit her guilt. “He wasn’t supposed to be on that stage, Alison was,” Caleb grimly replies, caressing her with tense, almost punishing, fingers. |

| “Why do you keep saying that?” she whines. “Who cares who—who cares? It doesn’t make a difference who was supposed to be there, Caleb, my father is suffering right now.” “You tried to set Alison up,” Caleb tells her, his hands grasping her face, forcing her to look at him. “Your father got in the way. . . .You did this to him. That’s why all this happened. You were trying to hurt Alison.” |

| “I didn’t want to kill her!” Livvie cries, still evading the truth. “I just wanted to ruin her show, her fashion show, Caleb. She made me so mad!” “It didn’t matter to you that I had a plan?” he yells. “I’m sorry,” she replies in a soft, meek, childlike voice. “The same evening!” he scolds. “By sabotaging Alison, you sabotaged me!” |
