“The light falling at that moment,” Caleb insinuates, his voice cold.

“I know, my dad shouldn’t . . . ” she hesitates.  “He shouldn’t have been up there, I know.”

“I know,” Caleb echoes sternly.  “Alison should have, according to the schedule.”

“Caleb, I am not thinking about the schedule right now.  I don’t know anything about the schedule,” she insists.  “I’m just really worried about my father, OK?”

“Of course, Sweetheart,” he says softly, relenting and hugging her close to him.
Their moment of closeness is cut short when Alison, concerned for Livvie, walks over to offer comfort.  Even though Livvie has on several occasions tried to kill her, Alison still reacts instinctively with compassion.   She epitomizes everything Livvie is not, everything Livvie claims to despise yet perhaps also secretly envies.

“Livvie, hey, I’m really sorry about your dad,” she consoles.  “I don’t know what happened.”  Ironically, Alison seems to blame herself for what happened to Kevin since the accident took place in her gym, not knowing that Livvie was responsible for the light fixture’s collapse.  She even offers to drive Livvie to the hospital to visit Kevin.
When Livvie, at first, politely resists Alison’s offer, saying that Caleb will take her to the hospital later, Caleb suggests that she go with Alison and he will meet up with her later.  Sensing that his ring is in the gym somewhere, he is determined to find it before anyone else does, and he is relieved that Alison can take Livvie to the hospital so that he can spend more time searching.  With a hug and a tender assurance that everything will be all right, he bids Livvie goodbye.

Caleb’s search is interrupted by Rafe, who, appearing to share Caleb’s indifference towards the tragedy affecting their loved ones, is equally fixated on finding the ring.

“What’s the matter, Caleb?  The night not go quite as planned?” he taunts.

“I would say it’s pretty obvious tonight was close to a total disaster,” Caleb snarls in response.  “You know, I don’t have time for your games.  I just want to get my stuff and go be with Olivia.  In case you hadn’t noticed, she’s pretty upset.”
