| His assurances, however, are not enough for Livvie to let go of her jealous paranoia. She deceives him, or at least tries to, and he may be deceiving himself, too, wanting to believe that Livvie has changed, has suddenly become more reasonable. Together yet divided, they have different goals and strategies, different hopes for the evening’s conclusion. Arriving even earlier than Alison’s stringent schedule dictated, Caleb enters the gym, smirking deviously with Livvie at his side. Livvie takes advantage of the situation by asking if she could model for the fashion show. When Alison, astonished that Livvie would even want to model for the fashion show, balks at saying “yes,” Livvie insinuates that Alison must be afraid of being upstaged. “What’s wrong, old friend?” Livvie sneers sarcastically. “Are you afraid I might steal the show?” “Why would you want to be in the fashion show?” Alison retorts. “I mean, especially with it being here in our gym?” |

| “Well, Caleb is right,” Livvie smiles, sweetening her approach. “It just sounds like it would be a whole lot of fun.”
“Or maybe you really did get upset about the picture in the paper and you decided you didn’t want to stay too far away from Caleb, right?” Rafe accuses as Caleb, slyly nonchalant, munches on a banana. “I always want to stick close to Caleb,” Livvie replies. “I don’t need any picture in the paper to make me do that.” Turning to Alison, she reiterates her desire to be in the fashion show, demanding to know whether she will be allowed to model. To keep peace and avoid unnecessary confrontation, Alison reluctantly agrees to let Livvie model, then goes off with Caleb as he does the sound check. Rafe and Livvie, simmering in their own insecurities, argue about who is to blame for their jealousy, with Rafe accusing Caleb of setting up the paparazzi attack and Livvie accusing “sweet little Ali” of having “the hots” for Caleb. While Caleb goes through the motions of doing a sound check, Alison frets about the show. “What happened to the vow that we all made?” she worriedly inquires. “Never going to happen,” Caleb smiles. “Right, this all started again because of this stupid ring,” Alison points out. She looks at him, her eyes plaintive, pleading. “If you’re planning on doing something, I’m just going to ask you honestly, please don’t hurt anyone, OK?” she implores. As if sensing he will not give her the answer she wants, the assurance she needs, she does not wait for him to reply, but, instead, hurries off to check on the crew. “Oh, Alison,” Caleb sighs once she has left. “Take something that doesn’t belong to you and you’re going to get hurt.” |
