| "The Gift" #13 (cont.) “This just makes it that much more of a surprise,” Caleb interrupts her. “Why not just get the song out there some other way?” she suggests, “like some way we can control? On our turf somehow? In a CD or on the radio or . . .” “Because my way gets the ring back to me the fastest,” he explains. “As long as that ring is in somebody else’s hands, anything could happen. It’s not the plan that’s bothering you. You’re upset because I didn’t tell you first.” “You told Alison and then you both went to Rafe, and then, of course, I was the last one to find out,” she pouts. “I had to do it my way,” he asserts. “Don’t tell me that you are jealous of the ring now?” He sits beside her, caressing her face and stroking her hair. |

| “Well, how can a girl compete with a ring that makes all of your wishes come true?” she replies. “Look at me. You do not need to compete with anything,” he emphasizes. “But if I had that ring . . . ” she muses, thoughts of power and control beginning to brighten her mood. “What would you wish for?” he prompts. “I don’t know,” she smiles slightly. “I was thinking, maybe a very rich, very old man who only had eyes for me.” |
