"The Gift" #10 (cont.) “Jamal might be a vampire, but he is one of my tribe,” Rafe challenges, countering Caleb’s claim to Jamal. “So you know what? You do what you want to do, and so will I. It’s your call. . . . Come on, what do you say, Caleb?” Like ruthless hostage-takers, the two men then begin to test each other’s resolve by threatening to kill their respective captive. Rafe, in this instance, is every bit as cold-blooded and unethical as Caleb, showing little regard for Livvie’s life as he uses her as a pawn to coerce Caleb into freeing Jamal. He, like the vampires he has devoted his life to slaying, is a killer, unswayed by compassion for his enemies and his prey. Although he believes himself to be aligned with the forces of good, he shows no moral compunction about murder when it comes to those he considers foes.

“Oh, I think I’ve made enough compromises,” Caleb snarls. “That ring belongs to me. It was my father’s legacy.” “OK, so what’s it going to prove to kill Jamal?” Rafe, squeezing Livvie’s neck, demands.

“Maybe it would teach you all a lesson,” Caleb muses, smiling grimly. “Maybe I would just enjoy it.” “Then you know what—go ahead and do it. But the second you snap Jamal’s neck,” Rafe warns, tightening his grip on Livvie, “I’m going to do the same to your little girlfriend. . . . Here’s the deal, Caleb. This is how it’s going to go down. You kill Jamal for his part in losing the ring, then I am going to do the same thing to Livvie, because, after all, she is the one that lost it to begin with, right?”
Distorting the truth with his murderous threat, Rafe intentionally glosses over the fact that Livvie only lost Caleb’s ring because of her father’s drug-induced treachery. Livvie’s father, brainwashed by Joshua, managed to steal Caleb’s ring from her. It was not her fault the ring was taken from her.
