"Desire" #2 (cont.) "I can see how much pain I have caused you," he says soothingly, his voice as smooth and soothing as honeyed cough syrup. "And if I could take back every moment of it, I would." "You don't mean that," she snaps. "Yes, I do. I never meant to hurt you," he insists. "All you ever wanted was Olivia. . . or . . . or Livvie," she hisses as he sits down beside her, gazing at her intently. "You even settled for Tess over me. You gave up everything that we could have had because of your stupid obsession, and look where it left you." "You're right," he nods, chastened. "What?" she exclaims, shocked by her arrogant husband's admission of error. "The obsession from my past ruined my future," he humbly confesses. "Look where it left me." "At least you're not dead. You're just human," she points out, as if expressing relief that he is still alive. "Hmmm. It's strange," he reflects. "Because my needs . . . my needs now are completely different." "How?" she asks, desire resurfacing from beneath her anger. "They're all different, starting with that insane obsession with Olivia," he explains with an embarrassed smirk. "Do you really expect me to believe that you're over that now?" she retorts, clinging to her self-protective scorn as she tries to resist his seductive allure. What he lacks in vampire magic he makes up for in his enticing blend of sensuality and feigned repentance. "All I can say is I'm just not blinded by that. . . that need for her," he confides. "Good for you," she replies primly. "But, even more important, more painful . . ." he haltingly continues. "I can see the destruction I caused for everyone, especially you." Gently, he touches her face.

"I don't believe you," she scoffs, her resistance weakening. "I don't blame you," he says wistfully. "I haven't given you much reason to have faith in me. You and I both know what we had together. Now that's gone forever. And that's the real tragedy in all this, Elizabeth." He says her name like a caress, a solemn, guilt-filled farewell.

"What are you saying?" she asks, her voice softening. "What I'm saying is I'm sorry. Losing you is my biggest regret," he laments. "Stop it!" she scolds him, trying to catch herself from falling back under his spell. "I know what you're doing. You're just trying to pull me back in."
