| "Why? Where are you going? You got plans?" Rafe mocks. "Yeah, I've got to get to Olivia," Caleb replies, grimacing with pain. |
| "Well, well, well, look who's up for his last look around," Jack taunts, the knife pressing against Caleb's flesh. "Go ahead, struggle, Caleb. Go ahead. You're about to realize what it's like to have the life slowly drained out of you." "You're a little man, Jack," Caleb snarls, his lips curled in disgust. "You always will be." Even though he is at Jack's mercy, Caleb retains his arrogance and uses his cutting wit to psychologically emasculate Jack. As in "Tainted Love," "Tempted," "Naked Eyes," and "Surrender," Caleb's belittling remarks reinforce Jack's feelings of inadequacy. Jack may temporarily have the power to kill Caleb; however, Jack cannot truly triumph over him since he knows that Caleb was always the superior man, the rival against whom Jack could never compete. "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't kill you, huh?" Jack goads, but before Caleb can answer, Alison, arriving at the spring in search of Rafe, prevents Jack from tormenting Caleb any further. "Jack, Jack, what are you doing?" she exclaims in horror. "Doing us all a favor, Alison," Jack mutters. "Get out of here!" "No, no, you can't!" she pleads. "Listen to me. Stop for one second. What if the water from the spring made him human again?" "No, he's not human. He'll never be human, fangs or no fangs," Jack hisses. "I'm going to finish him off." "No, you can't. That would be like murder. You can't do it," she urges, hypocritically committed to saving Caleb now that he is human but lacking any compassion for him when he was a vampire. Like her fiancé, Rafe, she has a double standard concerning vampires, seeing nothing wrong with murdering a vampire yet believing it is morally unacceptable to kill a human or their vampire friend Ian. "Well, I just have to live with that," Jack growls. "If you don't want to watch, go, get out of here." Roughly, Jack pushes Alison aside, accidentally knocking her down, as Rafe comes back to rescue Caleb. Realizing that his violent temper inadvertently caused him to hurt Alison, Jack finally backs off from his murderous vendetta against Caleb and walks away. "So, how are you doing Morley?" Rafe smirks once Jack has left. "You enjoying the show? I am," Caleb sneers. Though bleeding and out of breath, Caleb remains defiant. "Well, as a matter of fact . . . " Rafe agrees. "Look, either help me or take a walk," Caleb grumbles. "Either way, do it fast." |
