"Tempted" Episodes 9-11 (cont.)

When asked where she is going, Livvie mockingly replies, “Where do you think, Jack?  I’m going back to my husband.  Time for me to go back to Caleb.  I told you I have to go.  Caleb is waiting for me.  I’m his wife, Jack.  I belong to Caleb.”

“No, Livvie.  You belong to me,” Jack cries.  “You love me.”

“Not anymore,” Livvie retorts.  As he stumbles blindly after her, chasing visions of her strutting, seductive disdain, Livvie warns him that he’ll never be able to find her.  “You can’t find someone who doesn’t want to be found,” she says, leaving him in his prison of yearning.

Wandering dejectedly, Jack persists in seeking the woman who resists capture. At his feet he notices a sprinkling of white petals stained with crimson the color of Livvie’s seductive dress.    Following the path of spattered petals, he discovers Livvie’s blood-drenched nightgown.  “Caleb got you,” he screams.  “Oh, God.  Be safe.  No!”

While Jack dreams of Livvie’s desertion and betrayal, Livvie, sleepwalking, follows Caleb’s voice to his cave.  Dressed in her white satin nightgown, Livvie looks vulnerable, pure, innocent, a far cry from the fiery sadistic temptress of Jack’s dream.

In Caleb’s lair, Livvie searches for Caleb's ring in the  music box, but when she fails to find it, she again fears for her sanity.    “God, maybe I really am losing my mind and I’m going crazy,” she mutters to herself.

“No, you’re not,” Caleb suddenly replies.  “You’re not crazy, Olivia.”

“Caleb,” Livvie gasps, seeing him appear as a transparent specter, before her.

“Honey, I’m home,” he jokes, smiling seductively.  “Don’t I get a kiss from my darling wife?”

“But you’re dead,” Livvie exclaims.  “I saw you die.”

“Yeah, yeah, “ Caleb responds.  “You people really did a number on me.”

“Then how am I talking to you?” she wonders.

“Well, it’s one of those good news, bad news things,” he sighs.  “I’m not exactly alive, but I ain’t dead either.  I’m in kind of a holding pattern.”

When she asks him how he got there, Caleb explains that it’s her love which brought him back.  “When you heard my music, when you opened the box, you made all this possible.”

“I didn’t bring you back.  I don’t want you anywhere near me,” Livvie protests.

“Oh you did revive me, Sweetness,” Caleb smirks.  “And you know why.”

“Because it was an accident,” Livvie says, trying, as usual, to escape responsibility for her actions.

“It was love,” Caleb tells her.  “True love conquers all.”

“I love Jack,” Livvie argues, reverting again to her customary refrain.

“Oh, please, not this again,” Caleb scoffs.  “You were the only one who heard my music, Olivia.  Don’t you get it? . . . You still feel me.  You feel me because we’re still connected.”

“No.  You’re just a poison that is in my system,” Livvie replies, seeing in her lover the serpent which bit and transformed her, the seducer who tainted her forever.
