“The truth,” she gasps.  “That you’ve been behind their troubles all along.”

“Hmmm.  I’m dead, remember?” he points out.  “You’re the one that destroyed their lives.”

“They won’t believe that,” she says in a frightened, desperate voice.

“Jack did,” Caleb reminds her, releasing his hold and walking behind her.

“They’ll understand that I didn’t know what I was doing,” she tries to convince herself.

“And how long is that going to play?” he scoffs.  “You’re the only that’s seen me.  You start talking about my plans for revenge, and they’re going to think you’re crazy.” As before, Caleb makes use of Livvie’s fear of hereditary insanity as a way of ensuring her compliance.

“No,” she sobs.

“They’ll lock you up and throw away the key,” he taunts.  “Is that what you want?”

“I want you out of my life,” she cries in futile defiance.

“I think you protest too much,” he smirks.  “I can still see the desire behind the anger.  You still want me.  I can give you what no one else can.  And that’s why you’ll always help me.”  Guiltily, knowing the truth he speaks, she tries to avoid his gaze.

“I have to warn my friends, make things right,” she repeats.

“You can’t undo what’s already been done,” he tells her.

“They may not believe me, but I have to try,” she persists.  However, as she tries to leave, she is stopped by an enveloping red light that captures her, holding her immobile in its aura.

“No, Sweetheart,” he murmurs warningly.  “You’ll leave when I say you can.”

"Let me go," Livvie pleads.

"You can leave when I say you can leave, not before," Caleb repeats, as he makes the imprisoning red light disappear.

"OK, go ahead!" Livvie yells, walking up to Caleb and glaring at him.  "Hold me here, keep me your prisoner, do you want to me, but I will never help you hurt my family and friends ever again!"

"Oh, you don't think so?" Caleb teases.

"I know so," she rages.  "And I'll tell you something else.  When I get out . . . "

"You mean 'if'," he interrupts her.

"When I get out," she says emphatically, "I'm going to tell everyone the truth, that you're back and you're trying to destroy them all."

“You’d do that?  You’d ruin everything we’ve worked so hard for,” he accuses, trying to make her feel guilty for abetting his plans and then betraying him.

“There is no ‘we’ here, Caleb.  You made me do all those things,” she scolds.  “I know now, and they are going to know, too.”

“Fine,” he sighs, running his fingers through his hair and then placing his hands on his hips in weary exasperation.  “You know, maybe you should tell them.  Maybe I’ve been going about this all wrong.  They were bound to find out I’m alive, right?”

“So you’re letting me go?” she asks in disbelief.
