“Do you really believe that, Livvie?” Rafe asks.

“Jack and the others will all end up leaving me one day.  But Caleb will be with me forever,” she intones in a languorous Morticia Addams voice of sad, sleepy sensuality.  “Their human love fades, and his never will.”

“I am so proud of you, Sweetheart,” Caleb purrs, kissing her tenderly.
“Then do you got the guts to stop pulling her strings for a second and let me start talking to her, huh?” Rafe dares Caleb.

“Be my guest,” Caleb smiles and walks away to site on the railing of the bridge.  “With or without me, she knows who she belongs with.”

“Look at me, Livvie,” Rafe urges.

“So don’t tell her what to do,” Caleb warns Rafe.  “It isn’t nice and it’s against your rules.”

“Livvie, listen to me,” Rafe pleads.  “I know about life, human life.  I know how fragile it is.”

“So very, very short,” Caleb interjects.

“I also know there’s only one thing that has the power to transcend both time and death,” Rafe continues, trying to ignore Caleb and focus on the battle at hand.

“Taxes?” Caleb taunts.
“Love, Livvie,” Rafe goes on, relying on his tried and true clichés to bolster Livvie’s faith.  “Human love.  When it’s real, it never dies.”

“She didn’t just fall of the turnip truck, Man,” Caleb laughs scornfully.   “She’s been let down her whole life.  That is, until we met.”

“Think about Jack,” Rafe implores Livvie.  “How you met, how you feel in love, how he fought to save your soul even if it meant giving up his own.  Think about that kind of love.  That’s real.”

“Oh, please,” Caleb scoffs, rolling his eyes.

“It did feel so good,” Livvie says in a tiny, hesitant voice.

“That’s it,” Rafe coaches.  “Allow yourself to remember the good times, before you were under Caleb’s shadow.    Then maybe you’ll start to remember other things.”

“I want to . . . I want to remember everything,” Livvie replies, gaining more assurance.
