"Tempted" Episode 36 (cont.)

"Leave me, then because I had a good life before you, Caleb," Livvie hisses.

His back to her, Caleb grimaces, an expression half-mocking, half-sad, as if he's trying to make himself laugh so that he won't feel her rejection.  He assumes the mask of derisive comedy but inside he's wearing the mask of lonely, exiled tragedy.    "Your life was nothing before I found you," Caleb sneers.  "It was an illusion, a fairytale told to keep you in line."

"No," she says sadly.  "I had a family and a man who loved me."
"Don't make me laugh," Caleb smirks.  "Your father locked you up, your mother lied to you, and Jack, amongst other things, told you you were too psycho for him.  Is that your definition of unconditional love, Olivia?  If you put your faith in mortals, what you fear most in this world will come true.  They'll leave you and you'll be alone."

As Caleb dangles before her the threat of loneliness and insanity, Livvie makes one last attempt at defiant resistance.  "No, they won't.  They won't," she cries.  Her face is worried, panicky, for she no longer believes in her wavering hope.
"They will.  It's called human nature," Caleb says coldly, knowing all too well the fickleness of human love and the bitterness it leaves behind.

"No, Caleb.  Please don't go," she begs, grabbing his arm.

"No.  You made your choice, Olivia," Caleb reminds her in  a stern, disciplinary tone.  He touches her face, but his gaze is grim and unyielding.   "Now you can live with it.  But know one thing--for the rest of your life you'll miss me."   He speaks with the stoic authority of an oracle predicting Livvie's unalterable fate.  Try as she might to live her life without Caleb, Livvie is always haunted by his lingering residue, the tainting, transfiguring caresses she can never banish from her memory or soul.

"No, please," she implores, reduced to the sniveling, helpless dependency of a lost little girl.  "Just stay with me, please."

"I've given you this time to get over Jack, and where's it gotten me?" Caleb demands.  "What is there for me to stay for?"

"Me," Livvie says in a tiny, defeated voice.
