“Dreams can’t hurt you,” he reassures her.

“Yeah, but I can’t remember them,” she says with a vacant, spellbound expression.  “They’re so out of reach, I just. . . I’m so confused.”

“You don’t have to feel lost, Olivia,” he soothes.  “No matter where you go, I’m with you, guiding you.”

Caleb’s words of reassurance, though tender and loving, reveal his need to dominate and possess.  He “guides” Livvie’s thoughts, directs her actions, demands her surrender.  Like a cult leader, a messiah figure, a “personal Jesus,” Caleb consoles and controls.   He eases her feelings of guilt and offers escape from a troubled mind in exchange for submission and obedience.

“You’ve always been there for me,” Livvie acknowledges.  He nods in agreement as she bends to his will.  “But why do you have to hurt the others?”

“Because they’re against us, all of them.  Besides,” he smiles, “it’s destiny, our destiny.  But we shouldn’t worry about all that right now.  I think I know what you need.  And even thought I’m not quite at full strength, I think I can work a little magic.”    Extending his fingers in a summoning gesture, he makes a tub appear, an old-fashioned, claw-footed tub filled with luxuriant bubbles.    “Now let’s see if we can wash away some of those fears.”
Livvie sinks down into the foaming bubbles as Caleb gently bathes her.  “I know your body so well.  My beautiful wife,” he purrs seductively, kissing her neck.    As Livvie surrenders to the caress of the warm water and Caleb’s soft, silken touches, she also surrenders her mind to his control.  The bath tub, evoking the nurturing, regressive comfort of the womb, soothes away her cares and inhibitions.  She sighs in rapture, whispering “don’t stop” when Caleb hesitates for a moment.
