As Caleb touches her hair and clasps her gently to him, his expression shows a mixture of emotions—love, possessiveness, lust, triumph.  He delights in his power over her, aches to make love with her, and anticipates the satisfaction of his vengeful victory.
“I still don’t understand how this is happening,” she tells him.  “I mean, you coming back.”

“When the time is right, you will understand . . . everything,” he smiles secretively.

“But when will that be?” she wonders.

“When I know I can trust you,” he answers, slyly.  “and what you showed me today, that isn’t far off.  But for now all you need to know is that those people who tried to destroy me are getting what’s coming to them.  And when all this is said and done, you and I are going to live happily ever after.  You do want that, don’t you?  Happily ever after?”  He stares deeply, intently into her eyes and caresses her face.

“It’s all I’ve ever wanted,” Livvie replies.

“Me too,” he agrees, acknowledging their shared dream, their shared need for love and family.  “But there’s still work to be done.”
