"Tempted" Episodes 28-29 (cont.)

When Livvie walks into his cave, Caleb has vivid evidence that his plan is succeeding in tearing apart the relationship between Livvie and Jack.

“Why did you call me?” she asks, her expression desolate and despairing.

“Well, I wanted to see you,” Caleb says, rubbing his hands together meditatively and looking probingly into her eyes.  “But not like this.  Hey, you look sad.”
Struggling to control her tears, Livvie tells Caleb that Jack has left her and she can’t figure out how it happened, how she ended up in bed with that other man.  Accusingly, she asks Caleb, “Did you do this?  Did you make Jack stop loving me?”

“No, Olivia,” Caleb says soothingly, “I didn’t make him do anything.  Sometimes life is like a test, and it would seem that Jack has failed his.”
“What do you mean, a test?” Livvie inquires.

“That’s what I’ve been telling you all along,” he explains.  “This boy’s  [Caleb emphasizes the word “boy” with a touch of scorn] love for you is shallow and fleeting.”
“He loved me completely,” Livvie insists.  “He promised forever.  If I hadn’t messed
up . . . ”

“You made a mistake, one mistake,” he reassures her, “and he’s gone.  How ‘forever’ is that?  You’re starting to see it now, aren’t you? “  She walks away, pondering his words, her back towards him, her face expressing her loneliness and grief.  “Just like all the others,” Caleb continues.  “What they thought is true love is, in reality, conditional at best, here today, gone tomorrow.  But what we have is different, Olivia.  What we have is a love that will never die.”

Livvie turns to look at him.  “Maybe you’re right,” she concedes in a defeated tone.  “I needed to let go of Jack.  He’s . . . he’s probably better off without me.”
