| "Tempted" Episodes 23-24 (cont.) “It is going to stop. “I’ll make myself remember, and then I’m going to tell them,” she threatens. “I’m going to tell them that they still love each other and all these bad feelings and thoughts—that they’re not real.” “But they will be real very soon, my love,” he gloats. “For all of them. Especially Jack.” “If you think I am ever going to stop loving Jack . . .” she bristles. “Trust me,” he interrupts again. “You can’t see it yet. None of you can. But you will soon. You’ll all end up hurting each other.” “No. I would never hurt Jack. Not again,” she vows. “You’d be doing him a favor,” he replies. “A favor?” she repeats, bewildered. “Sometimes you’ve got to be cruel to be kind,” he observes. “Would you quit talking in riddles?” she demands. “If you quit pretending,” he teases. “You must know that every time Jack looks at you, he sees my hands all over you, touching you, caressing you. Then he thinks about you touching me.” “Stop it,” she mutters. “You don’t really believe he’ll ever get over our being lovers, do you?” he continues to taunt her as she looks ashamed and vulnerable, her towel wrapped protectively around her. “Didn’t think so. Any more than you could ever forget how it felt. Plus, as I get stronger, so does our love. You’re only going to end up hurting Jack more in the end anyway. Neither one of us wants that. He’s a good kid,” he says with mocking yet sincere affection. “Better to just make a clean break, cut him loose, leave him with what little shred of dignity he has left.” As before, Caleb’s words are deceptive and yet truthful. Although Jack is Caleb’s rival, he is also Caleb’s chosen protégé, a blood brother who rejected Caleb’s gift and spurned Caleb’s offers of companionship. For this betrayal Caleb could have killed Jack immediately, yet Caleb repeatedly gave him additional chances to accept Caleb’s tutelage. Caleb also speaks the truth when he says that Jack would be better off without Livvie, for as future events will demonstrate, Livvie will continually deceive and betray Jack. “Caleb, please, just go. Leave me alone,” she begs. “I hear the words come out of your mouth, Olivia, but your eyes and your heart are saying something else,” he informs her. “They’re saying, ‘no matter how hard we try, we can’t stop thinking about you.’ You know I’m your husband and that you came to me willingly.” “No,” Livvie says unconvincingly, her voice sad and defeated. “Yes. You did. And what we shared together you can’t fight or forget. Now I need something from you,” he whispers. “What? Tell me—what do you want?” Livvie asks, yielding to the feelings he arouses deep within her. “I need you, Olivia, to give me life,” he says seductively, walking towards her. “What I need, Olivia, is just one little kiss. Kiss me and make me whole.” |
