"Tempted" Episodes 18-22 (cont.)

“Yes!’’ Caleb raises his voice, suddenly angered.  “Yes, you will because that’s the way it has to be.  Do you understand me?  Do you understand me?” he bristles. “Look at me.  Now!” he roars.  Livvie, standing with her back towards him, flinches as he yells, and she turns, as commanded, to look at him.  “It hurts when you fight me,” Caleb says, softer now, his voice sad and choked as if he’s on the verge of tears.  “I don’t mean to raise my voice.  It’s just I’m struggling.  I’m . . . I’m trying to get my strength back so we can be together.  If there was another way. . . .  ”

“But there has to be,” Livvie insists.
“There isn’t,” he informs her.

“It just. . . It just feels so wrong hurting everybody,” she complains.

“Oh, no.  you can’t think of it that way,” Caleb replies.  “Ultimately, they’re hurting themselves.”

“Only if I could tell them,” she pauses.

“Don’t betray me, Olivia,” he warns.

“Betray?” she repeats.

“I won’t allow it,” he says sternly.

“I just feel so . . .” she hesitates.

“Guilty?  But I’ve taken care of that,” Caleb assures her. “When you walk out of here, your mind is empty.  You don’t remember.  You shouldn’t feel guilt, the most annoying of all human emotions.”  He makes a mocking expression of disgust as he says the word “guilt.” “What more can I do?”
“You can find someone else to love,” Livvie suggests.

“There is no one else,” Caleb answers.

“But I . . .” she protests.

“Shhh.  Shhh.”  He puts his fingers to his lips.  “You’re uncomfortable now.  But soon you’re going to realize how weak those people are that you’re trying to protect.”  His mouth curls into a snarl of loathing as he says the word “weak.”  “You’ll be disgusted by how easily they fall in and out of love.”
“But Jack . . .” Livvie starts to speak but before she can finish her sentence, Caleb has completed it for her.

“Will stop loving you,” Caleb interrupts.  “And I’ll be here for you.  When all of our enemies have fallen, I’ll be the one here.  And our family will finally come together.”
